MobileBurn is reporting that Android 2.2 Froyo is finally rolling out to Vodafone UK customers using the HTC Desire handset. Users on Vodafone should see the update soon if they haven't gotten it already. It has to feel pretty damn good that they can now officially get some Froyo goodness. Let us know how you like it!

I got the Samsung Galaxy Portal new a week ago. Setup seemed fine, but after a few hours I couldn't log into any google-related apps (gmail, googletalk) or the Android Market, though I managed to download one app from it before it stopped working (which seems strange). I can browse internet fine and facebook/twitter apps work fine as well. When I try and log in to any of them it tells me that it's "Unable to establish a reliable connection to the server". Has anyone else had this problem?
I even tried starting a new account with the phone, and that didn't work. Neither T-Mobile, Samsung have any answers. Anyone else had the same problem and a solution for it?

Thanks

Hi I am a newbie to Android with my first phone the HTC Desire.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this phone up until recently when I seem to be getting a few gremlins which I think are to do with software. Everything esle has been a dream with this amazing phone...that is bar the quality of the camera but hey with the amount of technology packed into this thing its a minort, it is more of a pc phone than a camera phone.

I wondered if anyone could shed a light on these issue or if any of you have had the same problems?

1.) The back lights on the physical buttons at the bottom of the phone sometimes stay on whilst the screen is asleep and there seems to be no pattern as to why it happens.

2.) I get anonymous text messages, at least 3 a week

3.) I placed the Android Search widget on one of my screens and whilst it worked fine for a while, I noticed one day it had moved position but had also moved on top of other icons on the same screen. I tried to click and hold the widget so to move it but there was no response. I then tried to move the other icons underneath and they moved fine. My thought is it was a sort of ghost icon left from the actual widget but I couldn't move it. I ended up creating a different scene to get around it as it could not be moved.

4.) I always lock my phone and yesterday a call came through while the phone was in my pocket. I pulled the phone out expecting to swipe the unlock to answer the call but it already had gone to the active call screen. I couldn't answer the call as there was no connection even though the button to end call was showing. So I tried to go to the home screen and turn it off but there was no response, the screen had frozen. The only way I could get the phone back into action was pulling the battery out...not ideal! I called my Girlfriend as I thought it was her and she said it rang twice and then went dead so it does seem to be an issue with the phone as at my end the call seemed to be active.

Maybe I am expecting too much, I dont require perfection and all phones have there issues but there seem to be too many issues here in quick conscession ( I have had the phone about a 7 x weeks now) which other friends who have the same phone do not have these problems mentioned above...maybe its a duff phone!

I am with Orange so am going to call them but sure I will end up with a call centre bod unable to help with these specific queries...any ideas/suggestions greatly recieved! Smiley

Thanks

Hi all
My LG GW620 just arrived in the post, and it has a US keyboard. I'd like to edit the keymap so that [shift+4] gives me a £ instead of a $. Does anyone know how to do this?
Cheers

Hi All

I currently have an HTC Touch but am seriously considering changing it for an HTC Desire, but before I do I need some questions answered.

I need to read Japanese, Thai, and Korean, and input Japanese (the others would be nice, but aren't critical), first off is this possible? And assuming it is, with my current WinMobile phone, I can only do this by loading the fonts into the phones on-board memory, this mean that regardless of how much space I have on the memory card, I am constantly running out of memory, does Android work in the same way?

I see that DashWire has an android client, so not critical but is it possible to hook this phone up to a Linux box? I would have thought so, but the only thing yum can find to do with android is fonts.

I currently use WiFiFoFum for WarDriving (well WarWalking really LOL), are there any apps for android that will do the same thing?

Is there anything else I should know/keep a look out for with either this phone or android in general?

Thanks in advance.

I can see where you would have trouble finding the documents. I found the specs: http://www.huaweidevice.com/community/servlet/JiveServlet/download/127-287122-288586-9525135/HUAWEI%20U8230%20Smart%20Phone%20Product%20Description.pdf

I would contact your service provider for help with this.

Hi

I am afriad my query is not of the technical class of the ones I read on this forum
However I am upset. I have changed my Blacberry fo a Huawei U8230. I live in France and the user manual supplied is in French. This is not a big problem but I would prefer a choice of  technical document in several languages as is normal and certainly with my Blackberry. I have seached the web hiogh and low for user documentation for the U8230.  Would be etewrnally gratefull if somebody could give me a link

Hi,

Thanks for that, I've learnt more in a few minutes than several hours following links on the internet.

I found the reason for my concerns from Orange.  It seems that as I'd only bought into the bundle on Saturday, and my billing date is the 19th, they'd given me a (generous) pro rata allowance of 100 Mb to see me through.  I'd gone on line, where it shows the 500 Mb bundle, with 98 Mb remaining, all in a day!  Panic set in.  None the less, I'm astounded at how fast I can use this up without playing with the general Facebook etc.  Being a starry night, and having a brand new toy, I tried Google sky map this evening. That's relatively hungry.  You'd think the package could be run stand-alone, without reference to a data base else where, unless they're pulling my activity profile of course...

Anyway, the point being I'll be implementing a lot of these recommendations... once I learn what they all mean (Global BES Policies?), and how to implement them.  It will all come in time.

Thanks again,

Lewis

I found the below on another site for Blackberry users, but the ideas may help you to. Look at what other apps besides the email which may be connecting.

From: http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/33240

1) Block data or internet from the server or network end e.g. global BES policies
2) Properly close any application after use by clicking on the menu and selecting exit. Letting programs run in the background may use data and will reduce battery life
3) Don’t download any automatic updating programs e.g. stock feeds, weather apps
4) Don’t tether to a computer and use as a wireless modem (also referred to as DUN, dial up networking)
5) Enable WiFi mode (if available) and utilize free WiFi locations for surfing
6) When in WiFi – ensure you have not lost the WiFi connection and have accidentally switched to regular cellular coverage. One recommendation is to turn off the cellular radio when in WiFi so your guaranteed no extra data fees
7) Save unnecessary web surfing for a regular desktop/laptop
Cool Set up email filters to keep unwanted messages
9) Use WAP surfing rather then full HTML surfing
10) Remove/hide built in icons/applications which offer pay services e.g. iPhone apps store
11) Ensure smaller or simpler applications are used which are lower data consummators e.g Blackberry Maps uses 5 to 10 times less data then Google Maps
12) Use basic GPS & Maps rather then services like TeleNav which will consume more data
13) Limit the downloading of attachments like Word or Excel files for important and time sensitive reasons only
14) Choose “view only” rather then downloading a full attachment if that option is available
15) Do not surf to streaming video sites e.g. YouTube a rough/general rule of thumb is 1 min. of video equals 1 MB of data
16) Do not enable remote video viewing services/applications e.g. Sling box
17) Do not attach & send files from a device unless the attachment is residing on a remote server and you are just sending a command to send from the server rather then sending the whole document from the device. e.g. send via BIS rather then sending a Documents to Go file on the new Blackberries
18) Download applications through your desktop software rather then OTA (Over the Air)
19) Know your service plan and use other means of communication which may be part of your plan or free to use e.g. SMS, MMS, Pin to Pin, voice calls, emails
20) Have a meeting or 1 on 1 discussion with end users to inform/train and ensure understanding of how mobile data devices and services work and are charged.

I'm very new to smartphones.  I've previously been satisfied with my Nokia 6300 and a PDA, but succumbed over the weekend and now have an HTC Hero, tied to Orange.

After some checking around I went for the 500 Mb bundle.  I set my incoming emails to a 5 Kb limit (Text only), and thought all would be well.  Now, after just 1 day with a 3G connection only (no WiFi available at work), I checked on my orange account to find I have used 400 Mb!  A friend has sent some V.Large files attached to some emails, but having preset the 5K limit I had thought these wouldn't be included.  They certainly haven't been downloaded to my phone.

Can anyone please advise me as to what is happening, and more to the point, what I can do about it?  All I want is to receive an indication of what emails have come in, with a brief description or a few words, so I can go and read them on a computer if they're important.

Somewhat worriedly,

Lewis
